Spanish scientists confirm the effectiveness of a treatment for the Alzheimer with pig cerebral proteins Madrid, February 2, 2006. (EUROPA PRESS) A group of Spanish scientists has confirmed the effectiveness of a treatment against the disease of Alzheimer with pig cerebral proteins, according to a study carried out in the Biomedical Research Centre EuroEspes, and published in the scientific magazine 'European Journal of Neurology.' The investigators have discovered the effectiveness of the treatment with smaller doses than the ones used until now. One is a peptidic compound, denominated ' Cere’ that uses pig cerebral proteins developed by biotechnological methods. With this treatment, they have been able not only to stop the constant deterioration of the cognitive capacity of the patients, but even to improve it in clinically significant percentage after a period of six months. This it is the first placebo-controlled test in the world that has demonstrated the inverse relation between the dose of the treatment and their effectiveness. The cerebral proteins of the pig show compatible characteristics with the human ones, after subjecting them to a complex hydrolysis, dissected and isolation process. The compound is administered to the organism by intravenous route and imitates the factors of neuronal growth, being able to improve the cognitive function of the patient. According to Dr Antón Alvarez, coordinator of the investigation, the treatments used up to the moment for the disease of Alzheimer provide symptomatic benefits during a limited time. Nevertheless, the action of ' Cere’ imitates the effects of the factors of neuronal growth and has shown effectiveness in the recovery of cognitive capacity, "which is translated into an improvement in the functionality of the patient in his daily life activities", added.
